It’s a big congrats to the team driving Western Australia’s technology roadshow for making a visible effort to bridge the digital divide. They really liked the first sentence
Not only is the roadshow introducing people to the Internet (thanks Big T), it’s also doing a good job of getting open source software recognised as well.
What I found most interesting is the DOIR’s willingness to create it’s own CD full of open source apps – like the already used TheOpenCD but with some additional applications needed by the community. Ubuntu CDs are also being distributed.
Hopefully the roadshow gathers its fair share of non-IT media coverage because such a project has the opportunity to snowball around the country. It has implications for the wider education and business sectors. Apparently a lot of small business people have found the roadshow to be a real eye-opener.
However it catches on, at the very least it’s good to see our taxes being put to something worthwhile. Well, at least in WA that is…
