As many of my readers would now know, I’ve finally succumbed to all the sky-high hype and installed Skype on my SuSE notebook. Thanks to James Purser for suggesting that I give it a go.
So my home wireless VoIP setup is as follows:
1. 512K/128K ADSL
2. 802.11b Wi-Fi access point and integrated DSL router
3. Lenovo R52 notebook running SuSE 10.0 (I’ll describe this in more detail soon)
4. Skype for SuSE Linux (rpm installs fine)
5. A cheap, $6, one-ear headset and microphone
I kid you not, all those pieces strung together gives a BETTER quality phone call than my PSTN landline.
My Skype username is rodneygedda (will I get SPIT upon?) so please give me a call. Although I must admit I’m only really on the notebook late in the evening. At this stage I haven’t purchased any of Skype’s value-added features but that may change soon because so far I have been more than impressed with the quality – and the sheer convenience of being able to call from a computer.
Here are my queries:
1. Is the SkypeOut service any good for us Aussies?
2. If so, what are the typical costs to call the average local landline?
3. What about a SkypeIn number for us Aussies?
4. Is the voicemail service good enough to be relied upon?
Rodney
I would give you a call, but a dear ex-colleague of mine says that my Skype account has disappeared. Seems they get deleted if you don’t use them for awhile! Oh well. If I install it again, I’ll give you a tinkle. It’ll be just like office hours… 😉
